Select, Protect & Maintain Strong Passwords
Select a Strong Password
Don’t make it easy for intruders to gain access to your
system. Select a password that is hard to guess but easy to
remember:
- At least 8 characters long – the longer, the
better.
- A mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and
punctuation marks.
- Do not use words that can be found in a dictionary.
- Avoid personal data like birthdays, kids’ or
spouses’ names, etc.
To make a password that's both strong and easy to remember,
choose a phrase that is unique to you, then boil it down
to letters and numbers:
- “My daughter’s birthday is June
25.” becomes: MdbiJ25.
- “I was 30 when I met my wife.” becomes: Iw30wImmw.
- Of course, don't use either of the above examples for your own password!
Protect Your Password
- Don't share your password with friends or colleagues.
- Don't write
it down. The best place to store your password is in your head.
- Use separate passwords for each system, especially when dealing with
non-university providers. For example, if you
use eBay, don't make your eBay password the same as your Oak password.
Change your Password Regularly
You should change your password every 30 days. To change your Oak
password:
