Quality of Service

Conserving Bandwidth on the Ohio University Network:

As you may have noticed, Ohio University's data network can seem very fast or very slow, depending on where you are going and what you are doing. Sometimes this simply is a result of Internet conditions beyond our control. Other times, it's the direct result of measures OIT has taken to ensure that the network remains usable for everyone on campus. These measures are known in the industry as Quality of Service (QoS) controls.

To help you understand Ohio University's QoS controls and the reasoning behind them, you'll need to know a bit about how data networks operate.
