Eudora 5.2 & 6.1 for Windows Secure Configurations

Note: If you are upgrading from a version of Eudora older than 5.1 and have trouble updating, please call the Support Desk at 740-593-1222.

New Accounts

If the New Account Wizard opens automatically, click the Cancel button to close it and follow these instructions.

  1. Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
  2. Click the icon on the left to select the Getting Started category.
  3. In the "Real Name" field, enter your name as you would have it appear on outgoing mail.
  4. In the "Return Address" field, enter your Oak email address ("username@ohio.edu").
  5. In the "Mail Server (Incoming)" field, enter "oak.cats.ohiou.edu".
  6. In the "Login Name" field, enter your Oak username. This is equal to the portion of your Oak email address before the "@" symbol.
  7. In the "SMTP Server (Outgoing)" field, enter the outgoing ("SMTP") mail server provided by your internet service provider. If you are on campus or are using DialNet, you should enter "oak.cats.ohiou.edu".
  8. Click the icon on the left to select the Checking Mail category.
  9. Under Secure Sockets When Receiving at the bottom of the Checking Mail options, select "Required, Alternate Port" from the pull-down menu.
  10. Click the icon on the left to select the Sending Mail category. (Skip "Incoming Mail" for now.)
  11. Under Secure Sockets When Sending at the bottom of the Checking Mail options, select "Required, Alternate Port" from the pull-down menu.
  12. Click the icon on the left to select the Incoming Mail category.
  13. Select POP or IMAP. If you select POP, you should also select "Delete from server when emptied from trash."
  14. Click the OK button to close Eudora's Options window.

Existing Accounts

  1. Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
  2. Click the icon on the left to select the Checking Mail category.
  3. Under Secure Sockets When Receiving at the bottom of the Checking Mail options, select "Required, Alternate Port" from the pull-down menu.
  4. Click the icon on the left to select the Sending Mail category.
  5. Under Secure Sockets When Sending at the bottom of the Sending Mail options, select "Required, Alternate Port" from the pull-down menu.
  6. Click the OK button to close Eudora's Options window.
