The Office of Information Technology breaks OHIO's IT needs down into
functional areas that build on crucial but largely invisible foundations
to provide highly specialized, highly publicized academic and administrative
support services that touch the daily lives of nearly all students, faculty
and staff.
Each department has responsibility for one major
piece of that puzzle, with services becoming more specialized and visible
as one moves down the list:

Infrastructure - Building & Maintaining the Network
OIT Infrastructure ensures that OHIO's cabling and networking
systems meet the current and future demands of the university.
Our services include:
- Common fiber optic & twisted pair cable plant that supports
both voice and data
- Switching, routing and firewall hardware
- voice and data connections to Internet 1 and 2,
telecommunications providers, and third party content services

Systems & Operations - Keeping Core Systems Up and Running
Systems & Operations maintains the central servers and data center
on which the university's mission-critical systems are hosted. Such equipment
needs to be highly available, secure, scalable, and recoverable. Major
systems and functions that we administer include:

- Building access control & point of sale systems
- E-Mail and Calendaring
- Data Warehousing & report generation
- Front Door web server
- Central file storage solutions

Application & Information Solutions provides the administrative tools that make the university's day to day operations possible. Customer Support Services - One Stop for All Your IT Needs
Solid core services require consistent public face, not only to make it easier for customers to find the help they need, but also to identify problems before they occur and take advantage of economies of scale. Customer Support Services proposes to implement the following improvements over the next five years:
- Service Desk as first point of contact for all IT inquiries (ITIL model)
- Unified problem tracking & resolution system
- Campus Zone Support - provide appropriate first level support in the
field based on geographic locations and academic/administrative department needs
- Academic-Friendly Managed Desktop Environment - standard PC hardware
and software packages available at reduced purchase and support cost
- Encourage laptop use for student body through Go Mobile discount purchase program

Academic Technology - Intelligent and Appropriate Use of IT
Academic Technology promotes & supports intelligent use of
technologies for teaching, learning, research and creative activity through
five subgroups:
- Center for Academic Technology - design, development, implementation
and evaluation of technology-enhanced learning experiences/content for
faculty and instructors.
- Web Services and Academic Applications - development and maintenance of
university-wide web content and course management solutions, including
CommonSpot and Blackboard
- University Computer Labs - conveniently located, public computing
facilities for students, faculty & staff
- Training and Support - offers training in IT and communications
software and technologies to support academic, research and creative activities
- Testing, Scanning and Reporting - test scoring, course evaluations, data processing, and ad hoc reporting services

IT Advisory Council - Sound, Shared Governance
The ITAC plays a central role in determining how OHIO spends its limited technology resources. Composed of representatives from all major constituent groups, the ITAC directly advises the CIO on strategy and policy matters, assisting with the difficult process of prioritizing competing projects and demands, recommending/sponsoring IT policy changes, and establishing metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of OIT. The ITAC will consist of:
- 5 faculty
- 2 students
- 2 administrative staff (1 admin, 1 classified)
- 3 IT staff (1 central, 1 distributed, 1 regional)
- 3 Central Administration (Finance, Provost and Student Affairs)
- 4 Dean representatives
- 1 Research representative

IT Recruiting, Retention and Development - Investing in IT's Future through Staff Development
To build and sustain a quality IT organization, we must be able to recruit, develop and retain quality employees. To do so, we must:
- Provide market-competitive salaries and benefits wherever possible
- Cross-train mutliple individuals to eliminate single-threaded services
- Provide ongoing training for key technical staff
- Increase staffing levels in areas identified as under-staffed
