Internet 2 is the joining together of academic, government and industry partners to create a separate Internet to meet academic requirements in research, teaching and learning. To address these challenges, three goals have been defined:
- Create and sustain a leading edge network that will be accessible to a national research community.
- Direct network development efforts in order to enable a new generation of applications to fully exploit the capabilities of broadband networks.
- Work to rapidly transfer new network services and applications to all levels of educational use and to the broader Internet community, both nationally and internationally.
The Internet 2 project is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation.

What's Connected at Ohio University:
Any computer connected to Ohio University's network is able to utilize
Internet 2. Connection to Internet 2 is determined by the router. If
a location is available via Internet 2, the router will choose Internet 2
first. For any location not available via Internet 2, the router will
use one of the University's Internet 1 connections.
